About the Colloquium
The educational goal of APSAC’s Colloquium is to foster professional excellence in the field of child maltreatment by providing interdisciplinary professional education.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Apply state of the art treatment methods when working with abused and neglected children.
- Identify the most up-to-date information concerning working with abused and neglected children
- Prepare and report quality testimony in court cases, both as experts and as witnesses.
- Identify physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect in children.
- Apply model examination and treatment techniques for abused/neglected children.
Seminars have been designed primarily for professionals in mental health, medicine and nursing, law, law enforcement, education, prevention, research, advocacy, child protection services, and allied fields. All aspects of child maltreatment will be addressed including prevention, assessment, intervention and treatment with victims, perpetrators and families affected by physical, sexual and psychological abuse and neglect. Cultural considerations will also be addressed.

This year APSAC will be offering day long advanced training Institutes as part of the Pre-Conference offerings.(Additional fee required, see appropriate box on registration form)
Cultural Institute
This is APSAC’s 10th institute on cultural issues in child maltreatment. Seminars offered at the institute are designed to help professionals acquire the skills needed to work with diverse populations and to understand the impact of culture on experiences of child maltreatment. Cultural Diversity Networking Session (No additional fee, no pre-registration is required)
Welcome Reception and Poster Presentations
Poster presentations of research, practice, and program innovations will give you the opportunity to examine your colleagues’ recent work. (No additional fee, pre-registration is required – see appropriate box on registration form)
William Friedrich Memorial Lecture, Membership Luncheon and Awards Ceremony
The William Friedrich Memorial Lecture was created by APSAC to honor the many contributions and memory of William Friedrich, researcher, teacher, clinician, and friend to professionals working in child abuse & neglect. (No additional fee, pre-registration is required – see appropriate box on registration form)
Colloquium Collaborations
Presentations by National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) members will offer opportunities to share the activities and accomplishments of the network with a multidisciplinary audience of professionals serving traumatized children.
The International Society on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) will be co-sponsoring workshops during the cultural institute.
The American Prosecutors Research Institute (APRI) is providing support and speakers to address issues of prosecution in cases of child maltreatment.
Finally, theOffice of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and Fox Valley Technical College are providing several workshops throughout the Colloquium focusing on law enforcement and child maltreatment issues.
These collaborations will open up the opportunity for more networking for professionals interested in the area of child maltreatment. Each sponsored workshop is indicated throughout the agenda by asterisks.

Presentation Skills Level
(Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced) - The skill level has been designated for workshops included in the Mental Health (MH) track. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the training program, a skill level has not been designated for other scheduled sessions. Participants are urged to review the session descriptions to determine appropriateness in meeting individual professional needs.
