About the Child Forensic Interview Clinics

Consistent with its mission, APSAC pioneered the Forensic Interview Training Clinic model to focus on the needs of professionals responsible for conducting investigative interviews with children in suspected abuse cases.  Interviews with children have received intense scrutiny in recent years and increasingly require specialized training and expertise.  This comprehensive Clinic offers a unique opportunity to participate in an intensive 40 hour training experience and have personal interaction with leading experts in the field of child forensic interviewing.  Developed by top national experts, APSAC’s curriculum emphasizes best practices and research-based free recall techniques aimed at eliciting narratives, with a balanced review of several approaches.

Who Should Attend

• Anyone whose job includes interviewing suspected victims of child maltreatment.
• Professionals from the fields of mental heath, child protective services, law enforcement, social services, medicine, and law.
• Professionals who do not have extensive experience in forensic interviewing and who want to acquire or improve these skills. 

Participants Will

• Learn state-of-the-art forensic interview theory, research, and techniques.
• Practice interviewing skills in a supportive environment and receive feedback from experienced and knowledgeable professionals.
• Be better prepared to explain and defend interview techniques in court.
• Receive a Clinic notebook, a resource CD, and excellent reference books that will enhance your knowledge and abilities. 

Training Topics

• How investigative interviews differ from therapeutic interviews.
• Overview of various interview models and introduction to forensic interview methods and techniques.
• Child development considerations and linguistic issues.
• Cultural considerations in interviewing.
• Techniques for interviewing adolescents, reluctant children, and children with disabilities.
• Being an effective witness. 

Activities Include

• An interview practicum component providing an opportunity to conduct interviews where constructive feedback is utilized to build and improve professional skills.  This includes trainee interviews recorded on DVDs with actors utilizing real case role-plays. 
• “Mock court” where selected attendees are called to testify and are examined by attorneys who specialize in child abuse cases.
• Didactic presentations and skill-based exercises led by nationally recognized experts.

Clinic Information

Registration for each Clinic will begin at 7:30 AM on the first day.  Days One through Four will begin at 8 AM & end by 6 PM.  Day Five will be from 8 AM – 12:30 PM.  There will be a one-hour break for lunch on your own Monday through Thursday.  Attendance at the entire Clinic and during all of the Practicum Interview sessions (including interviews done by other attendees) is imperative.  This is a 40 hour course – in order to receive a certificate of completion, registrants must be present for the entire Clinic.  Do NOT plan to depart from the Clinic earlier than 12:30 PM on Friday.  Partial registrations are not allowed.  Please arrive early or stay late if you wish to combine your participation in the Clinic with sightseeing.

Below is training location & hotel information for each Clinic.  You are responsible for your own hotel reservations & expenses.  You are also responsible for all meals not provided as part of the Clinic, & for all transportation costs, including the cost of airfare & rental car expenses.  A light continental breakfast & afternoon refreshment break will be provided each day.

IMPORTANT: APSAC’s Forensic Interview Clinics are subject to cancellation in the event of insufficient registrations.  Therefore, DO NOT make non-refundable travel arrangements until you receive a confirmation of your registration from APSAC (approximately 1 to 2 months before the Clinic).  In the event of cancellation due to insufficient registrations, 100% of the registration fee will be refunded.

Seattle, Washington                                                   July 12 - 16, 2010

The WA State Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC), 19010 – 1^st Avenue South, Burien, WA 98148, is the location for the Seattle Clinic.  If arriving by air, you should fly in to SeaTac International Airport, which is approximately three miles from CJTC.  DO NOT, HOWEVER, make non-refundable travel arrangements until you receive a confirmation of your registration from APSAC (approximately 1- 2 months before the Clinic). Several area hotels will be available at discounted rates and a list of these will be provided to those who register for the Clinic.  You will be responsible for arranging your own transportation (rental car or taxi) back and forth from most hotels to CJTC (approximately 3 miles from the closest area hotels).  Please contact Clinic Manager Patti Toth at ptoth@cjtc.state.wa.us for additional information about this Clinic or for information about area hotels that may offer shuttle service back and forth to CJTC. 

Rental Car Information

A rental car is strongly recommended for Clinic registrants in Seattle if you wish to travel away from the airport area or do not want to rely on taxis or hotel shuttles.  APSAC is not responsible for transportation between your hotel & the Clinic location at CJTC.  If you require a letter for your agency regarding the need for a rental car, APSAC will provide one - simply let us know.

Continuing Education

Continuing education credit for these events (33.00 contact hours) is sponsored by The Institute for Continuing Education and is available as listed below to Clinic participants for a processing fee of $25.00 per person, to be included in the registration payment.    (The Clinic does not offer CME credits.)  Credit is awarded on a daily basis, with full attendance required for the days attended.    Continuing education packets will be available at the training.  If you have questions regarding continuing education, or for a listing of learning objectives by day, please contact The Institute for Continuing Education at: 251-990-5030; FAX: 251-990-2665.   

Psychology:   The Institute for Continuing Education is an organization approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The Institute for Continuing Education maintains responsibility for this program and its content.  Counseling:  The Institute for Continuing Education is an NBCC approved continuing education provider and a co-sponsor of this event.  The Institute for Continuing Education may award NBCC approved clock hours for programs that meet NBCC requirements.  The Institute for Continuing Education maintains responsibility for the content of this program.  NBCC Provider No. 5643.  Social Work:   The Institute for Continuing Education is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), though the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.  The Institute for Continuing Education maintains responsibility for the program.   ASWB Provider No. 1007.     Licensed social workers should contact their individual state jurisdiction to review current continuing education requirements for license renewal.    Marriage-Family Therapy:    The Institute for Continuing Education is an approved provider by the California Board of Sciences Provider PCE 636.  Drug-Alcohol:    The Institute for Continuing Education is approved by the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) to provide continuing education for alcohol and drug abuse counselors.  NAADAC Provider No. 00243.   Nursing:   The Institute for Continuing Education is an approved provider of continuing education in nursing by the California Board of Nursing, Provider CEP 12646.  It is the responsibility of nurses to check with their state board to determine if credit issued through an approved provider of the CA Board of Nursing is accepted for credit by their state board.
