Teaching Caregivers to Talk With Children About Feelings: Implications for Treating Child Trauma
Monica Fitzgerald, PhD and Kimberly Shipman, PhD
This Institute will provide comprehensive training on teaching caregivers to talk with children about emotionally-arousing events, including child trauma, in a way that facilitates children’s emotion regulation skills and enhances the supportive quality of parent-child communication. Participants will learn to implement “A Family Focused Emotion Communication Training program (AFFECT)” which is an evidence-informed intervention module that builds caregiver’s supportive emotion communication skills. Caregivers are taught specific skills that include: (a) active listening skills, (b) emotion coaching skills (e.g., labeling and discussion of emotion, modeling/teaching healthy coping strategies), and (c) emotion support skills (e.g., increase validation, empathy, and perspective taking; decrease invalidation and parent self-focus). These skills are taught through a combination of didactics and live, in-session coaching in which the therapist or other service provider serves as a coach as the parent talks with their child about emotionally-arousing events. The skills targeted by AFFECT are grounded in a large body of developmental research on child emotional development and parental socialization processes that show the significant impact of parental support (e.g., validation, invalidation) on their children’s development of emotion regulation, emotional security, and related mental health outcomes. AFFECT complements and extends evidence supported treatments for child trauma (e.g., TF-CBT; Trauma-Focused Abuse-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Kolko & Swenson, 2002). As part of this institute, participants will enhance their own skills in these areas while learning specific strategies for teaching these skills to caregivers. Training will include a combination of didactics, video review, role play, and small group practice. This institute is appropriate for all child and family service providers (e.g., therapists, caseworkers, adoption) who talk with children about difficult topics such as family disruption and separation, trauma, grief, divorce.
