Title: Adverse Childhood Experiences and their Relationship to Adult Well-being, Biomedical Disease, and Premature Death.
Dr. Vincent J. Felitti is the co-principal investigator of the ACE study, which
has now attracted national and international attention and analyzes the effects of traumatic childhood experiences on adult emotional states, biomedical disease, and life expectancy. Dr. Felitti will reflect upon the results of the ACE Study, highlight its key points and implications for public health and medical and mental health treatment.
Speaker Bio: Vincent J. Felitti, MD is a 1962 graduate of the Johns Hopkins Medical School. Dr. Felitti, an internist and infectious disease physician, was one of the founding physicians of Kaiser Permanente in San Diego in 1968, and was founding Chairman of the Department of Preventive Medicine in 1975, running that department until retirement in 2001. He is co-Principal Investigator of the 17,000 patient Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, exploring the profound relationship of ten categories of adverse life experiences in childhood to adult health, well-being, disease, and death decades later. Dr. Felitti is Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is currently Senior Editor of the Permanente Journal and on the International Editorial Board of the Swiss medical journal, Trauma und Gewalt. Dr. Felitti has served on advisory committees of the Institute of Medicine, the American Psychiatric Association, the Committee of the Secretary of Health and Human Services for Healthy People 2020, and the Advisory Committee on Women’s Services at SAMHSA.
